Introduction To Literature 2021 3A

Course modified date: 22 Aug 2021

This course builds students' habits of enjoying, understanding, interpreting, and critically analyzing various literary works ranging from personal interpretations to viewing literary works through various critical lenses (eg feminism, psychoanalysis, critical literacy, etc.). Based on critical pedagogical theory and a heutagogical approach, the teaching techniques in this course are problem-posing, close-reading, negotiating with others through collaborative activities, sharing projects in the web 2.0 society (eg Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Youtube, etc.). , photovoice, and argumentative essay writing. Students will undertake a comprehensive analysis of the main elements of poetry, prose, and drama through the lens of critical theory to make logical literary judgments and interpretations. It is expected that students will understand, question, and relate readings and resources outside of class before class in order to fully participate, contribute and question differing opinions and interpretations. This course will also increase awareness of various perspectives – where humans are separated by time, space and different cultures – so that students can build empathy and global awareness, acknowledge and consider various perspectives, and convince others of their interpretations/perspectives. In other words, Introduction to Literature is designed to help students become empathetic global thinkers, critical readers, creative meaning-makers, and compelling communicators.
