This course provides the students with the knowledge and skills of two subdisciplines in linguistics which deal with sounds, namely phonetics and phonology. To fulfill the aim of this course, which is to provide an outline of the sounds of English and how those sounds combine and pattern together, students need aspects of both. Phonetics is the systematic study of human speech sounds. It provides objective ways of describing and analysing the range of sounds humans use in their languages. Phonology is the language-specific selection and organisation of sounds to signal meanings.
