Teaching English to Young Learners

Teaching English to Young Learners

Course modified date: 28 April 2026

This course covers the fundamental principles of teaching English to young learners, including characteristics of young learners, stages of children’s cognitive development, and the criteria of effective teachers. It also explores various instructional approaches for young learners and provides practice in teaching skills. The course emphasizes the selection and use of teaching strategies that align with children’s learning characteristics (such as songs, games, and storytelling), as well as the development and use of instructional media (both technology-based and non-technology-based) in lesson planning and teaching simulations for language skills and language components.

The aim of this course is to prepare pre-service teachers to teach English as a foreign language to young learners (kindergarten and primary school levels) in both formal and non-formal educational settings. Instructional activities include concept development through direct instruction, cooperative learning, inquiry-discovery, and project-based learning approaches.

The learning process is designed to equip pre-service teachers not only with pedagogical competence in teaching English to young learners but also with the ability to develop and utilize materials and media that are appropriate to children’s language development and learning characteristics. This enables learning to be conducted in a creative, innovative, enjoyable, and motivating manner. Learning activities are conducted in a hybrid format, both in and outside the classroom, utilizing synchronous and asynchronous online learning.
