This course is aimed at developing students’ comprehensive knowledge about English verb patterns as verbs are syntactically considered as the main important element of a sentence. Thus, after having good knowledge on the verb patterns, the students are expected to be able to construct grammatical sentences, both in the written and spoken form, especially those which are used to express ideas in the academic context. The learning materials cover the basic concepts of English verb patterns and a number of English verb patterns, i.e. verb pattern 1 to verb pattern 25 including their derivative patterns which are generally divided under two big categories: transitive verb and intransitive verb (Hornby, 1975). The class is run through such teaching and learning activities as lecturing, sentence pattern identification, sentence building/production, sentence-level error identification and revision, and discussion.
