Essay Writing

Course modified date: 3 July 2019

Writing an expository essay concerns with conveying a clear purpose; providing support, and managing the parts in a way that enables it to crystal clearly communicate your point of view to your intended audience.  The word ‘expository’ roots from a Latin term, which means ‘to explain’; thus, an expository essay is used to explain some idea, concept, phenomenon, or experience.

An expository essay has a consistent format that functions like a skeleton. The skeleton consists of introduction (head), body, and conclusion (bottom). The introduction contains some sentences that provide context for the essay and a thesis statement that embodies the purpose (main point) of your essay. The body supports, explains, narrates, describes, or argues about/for the thesis you have stated in the introduction. The conclusion contains some sentences that just restate, but restate or remind efficiently with special emphasis about the significant points that have been discussed.

There are several types of expository essay, and in this course, the types that will be discussed are narration, description (or process), classification and division, comparison or contrast, cause and effect, and argumentation. Besides, some issues on sentence grammar will also be discussed.
